How Much Does It Cost to Print a DTF Transfer?

If you are in the custom apparel game, you have probably heard about DTF, also known as Direct to Film printing. It is fast, vibrant, and ideal for everything from one-off designs to bulk orders. But one question always comes up:

How much does it really cost to print a DTF transfer? And more importantly, how profitable is DTF printing?

Let’s break it down using a 12" × 12" transfer printed on a 24-inch wide-format DTF printer.

The Core Costs of a 12" × 12" DTF Transfer

When using a 24-inch wide-format DTF printer, the main materials used for a transfer are DTF film, DTF ink, and hot-melt adhesive powder. Your real cost may change depending on artwork coverage, white ink usage, print settings, waste, maintenance, and operator workflow.

1. DTF Film Cost

A 24-inch DTF film roll that is 328 feet long gives you strong production value because you can fit two 12-inch-wide transfers across the roll. Since 328 feet equals 3,936 inches, that gives you about 328 rows of 12-inch height. With two transfers per row, that equals about 656 total 12" × 12" transfer spaces.

At $55 per roll, your estimated DTF film cost comes out to about $0.08 per 12" × 12" transfer.

2. DTF Ink Cost

For this estimate, we are using a 5-liter ink set: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, and White. With updated pricing, the CMYK bottles are $29.50 each and the white ink bottle is $31.00, bringing the estimated 5-liter ink set total to $149.

Based on an estimated yield of 4,358 12" × 12" transfers, the ink cost comes out to about $0.03 to $0.04 per transfer. Real ink usage will vary depending on artwork size, color coverage, white ink density, and print settings.

3. Hot-Melt Adhesive Powder Cost

DTF powder is the adhesive layer that helps the transfer bond to the garment during the heat press process. For this estimate, we are using a 5kg / 11 lb bucket at $65.

Based on an estimated yield of 1,995 transfers per bucket, the powder cost comes out to about $0.03 per 12" × 12" transfer.

So... How Profitable Is DTF?

Many DTF transfer sellers charge around $3.00 per square foot, which equals one 12" × 12" transfer. When your estimated material cost is about $0.15, the gross profit before overhead can be strong.

This does not mean your net profit is $2.85 every time. You still need to account for labor, printer maintenance, electricity, packaging, software, misprints, test prints, cleaning supplies, rent, payroll, and other shop expenses. But from a material-cost standpoint, DTF has very strong margin potential.
